What is the Huka Falls jet boat ride like?
The ride heads upstream on the Waikato River, skimming close to the riverbanks and cliffs with 360-degree spins, then approaches the base of Huka Falls, where the river pours through a narrow gorge and over the falls. The boat holds in the swirling, foaming water below the falls for a close-up view before racing back downstream. On some trips, the route also takes in the Aratiatia Rapids when the dam upstream releases water.
Why is Huka Falls so powerful?
Because the whole of the Waikato River, flowing out of Lake Taupō, is squeezed into a narrow channel of hard rock before dropping over the falls. The water is a striking blue-white and moves with tremendous force. You can also see the falls from walking tracks and viewing bridges above.
Is there room to park an RV at the Huka Falls jet boat base?
Yes. The base is on the river north of Taupō, a short drive off State Highway 1 along the road to Huka Falls and the Wairakei Tourist Park, with car parks suitable for larger vehicles. Arrive in time for the briefing. The Huka Falls car park, for the walking tracks, can be busy, so visit early or late.
